Where did all the extras go? They only went to Blu-Ray

One of the great things about DVDs is the special features. I'm a sucker for deleted scenes, and making of documentaries. At least, that used to be one of the great things about DVDs.

Increasingly I'm noticing that the special features are on the Blu-Ray release only. I understand why they're doing it. It is a money driven scheme. But, speaking as someone who doesn't own a Blu-Ray player, I hate this trend.

Different Flavors of Nerdery

The term is a pejorative. It conjures up images of awkward people who are way better at math that you'll ever be. It can also conjure images of people dressed in fake armor milling around a fairgrounds somewhere. Not to mention the Star Wars/Star Trek stereotypes you can think of.

I'm not saying that these images are incorrect, I think there are some things that fit the term nerdery that are probably not the first things you think about.

Let's take fantasy football for example. There's a great quote I've seen out there in the wilds of the internet.

Fantasy football is Dungeons and Dragons for the guys who beat up kids that played Dungeons and Dragons.

Totally on the mark. When you think about it, which one of these things is more sad?

• Playing a game that recreates another game (FF)
• Playing a game that creates what has never existed (D&D)

And I'm sure that the professional poker players make fun of the professional Magic Card players. Silly really. Just admit that you're all card nreds and get over yourself already. Then again the Star Trek vs Star Wars feud has gone on for decades now with no end in sight.

We all have our obsessions, and if yours doesn't involve an alien, a superhero, mythical creature, it doesn't mean you're not a nerd. Obsessive sports fans, I'm talking to you....

Hello World

Yes, this is yet another internet blog. I know, I know, like the internet really needed one more blog....


To be fair, a couple hundred new ones have probably been created in the time it took me to wrtie this entry, so technically I guess I'm not as much of a newbie at this as I was when I started.

So, what's this one all about and why should you care? This is about nerdery in all of its glorious forms.

Nerdery? What is that?


Nerdery : Noun. A typical nerd activity. ("Want to go to the comic convention? There will be some serious nerdery going down.")

I feel that I am qualified to speak to this subject, through many lenses. I'm not claiming to be special in this respect. You can probably get the same thing from any number of message boards out there on the internet. But, this is my particular take on things, which is really what a blog is all about.
